Generic Diabetes Drug Recalled After Seizure Drug Discovery

Sun Pharmaceutical announced a nationwide voluntary recall of 2528 bottles of Metformin HCl Extended-Release Tablets after a customer complaint that some tablets of Gabapentin, an antiepileptic, were found in the bottle. Metformin HCl Extended-Release Tablets is the generic version ofSalix's Glumetza.
The affected product is supplied in 500-count bottles and has an NDC 62756-142-02 with an expiration date of 03/2016. This recall has been classified as a Class II recall.
Metformin HCl Extended-Release is a biguanide antidiabetic indicated as adjunct to diet and exercise in type 2 diabetes. Gabapentin is an antiepileptic indicated as adjunct in partial seizures and as treatment for postherpetic neuralgia. Taking Gabapentin can result in side effects such as dizziness, somnolence, visual disturbances, and incoordination.
