Michigan joins federal-state partnership on fungal meningitis outbreak

LANSING (WKZO) -- Michigan is now involved in a joint state-federal investigation into the deadly outbreak of fungal meningitis from a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy.

State Attorney General Bill Schuette notes the last such joint probe was after the Oklahoma City bombing.  Schuette was joined by U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz of Massachusetts to announce the partnership as they look to find criminal misconduct in the tainted steroids from the New England Compounding Center.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts the number of deaths in Michigan at 19 from the tainted steroids, with 264 people in the state falling ill.
