Drug Shortage Problems Continue

Despite a decline in the number of new shortages of medications reported in 2012, the total number of active shortages during a given year has continuously increased since 2007, reported the Government Accountability Office (GAO) at a hearing of the Committee on Energy and Commerce’s Subcommittee on Health. The February 10 hearing focused on actions taken by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent and reduce shortages since enactment of the Food and Drug Administration Safety and Innovation Act in July 2012.
