Michigan announces $100,000 fine, license loss over contamination at compounding pharmacy

LANSING, Michigan — Michigan authorities say the owner of a compounding pharmacy company has agreed to pay a $100,000 fine and give up its license over a complaint that it distributed tainted prescriptions.

Attorney General Bill Schuette and the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs announced the action Thursday involving Specialty Medicine Compounding Pharmacy of South Lyon and its owner, Kenny Walkup.

He loses his pharmacy license for three years, while the company permanently surrenders its license.

Schuette says the agreement follows a complaint that the company distributed tainted dextrose injections last October. No illnesses are reported, unlike an earlier contamination case involving a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy.
Twenty-two people from Michigan and 64 overall died as a result of fungal meningitis contamination of steroid materials from the Framingham, Massachusetts-based New England Compounding Center.
