CHICAGO, IL - This past Sunday, the CBS TV Show, "60 Minutes" did a story about compounding pharmacies and the effort by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to place certain restrictions on compounding pharmacies. In the past, there have been serious issues with some compounding pharmacies with adulterated formulas given to patients, some were seriously injured and two died.
Not all compounding pharmacies act in an irresponsible manner. They must pass stringent inspections and they all must be licensed. Personally, I use an excellent compounding pharmacy, Mark Drugs located here in the Chicago Metro area. The family fur child (Peeper Day) has been prescribed by her wonderful veterinarians at the Golf Rose Animal Hospital in Schaumburg, Illinois a drug to calm her over-active thyroid down. It is difficult to administer medications to our fur children. The same is applicable to young children and many adults prefer to administer certain medications (including bio identical hormones) through a trans dermal method. The pharmacists at Mark Drugs and their wonderful staff in the compounding laboratory are simply fantastic. Peeper is able to get a precise daily dose of medication without any further stress or medication side effects if taken orally.
I take issue with the FDA and their seemingly all out quest to quash compounding pharmacies with statements such as "unproven", "unreliable" and "unsafe". I further question the striking-force tactics of the FDA. For years, they have allowed some very dangerous medications that have caused serious allergic reactions, serious adverse health consequences and even death by patients that were prescribed and took the medications. Also, there are serious complications caused by certain medical devices, some implanted in patients. Where is the position of the FDA on this subject matter?
Let us not lose our freedom of choice. If a patient wishes to use a compounding pharmacy to fill medications, we should be able to do just that, without FDA intimidation, hostility and threats.
