Congressman Griffith pushing compound pharmacy bill

Congressman Morgan Griffith is hoping his latest bill on compound pharmacy regulation could become law by the end of the year.

The bi-partisan bill clarifies the Food and Drug Administration's authority, giving it more power to inspect and regulate compound pharmacies like New England Compounding Center.

That's the company responsible for last fall's fungal meningitis outbreak that killed 64 people nationwide, including five people in Southwest Virginia.

Last month a WSLS 10 investigation revealed a long history of violations by the company and a lack of action by the FDA.

The bill is now awaiting a vote in the House's Energy and Commerce Committee.
